NAO Expedition Package


North America Overland offers an package of equipment specifically suited for Series and Defender Land Rovers that will see off road use. We call this the NAO Expedition Package. This package consists of everything you have come to expect from our frame off restorations, but with additional off road equipment and heavy duty parts added. Some examples of these improvements include transmissions build specifically for heavy duty use, a winch installed for self recovery, skid plates and upgraded suspension. The Land Rovers are painted in NAO Expedition Tan. This paint has a matte finish which resists scratches better than high gloss paint. The tan color also does not show mud and dirty as readily as other colors. This means that the land Rover will not only perform but also look great in an off road setting.

NAO Expedition Package Applied to Defender

Engine

The engine is a Land Rover tdi, a direct injection 2.5 liter turbo diesel. This motor has a mechanical Bosch injection pump and does not use a computer or complicated electronics to run. The motor’s long block, injection pump, turbo and injectors are rebuilt. The motor has a new vacuum pump, starter and timing belt installed. The motor has all new ancillaries installed including a new water pump, alternator and power steering pump. The radiator and intercooler assembly, air cleaner assembly, oil cooler lines and radiator hoses are all new.

Transmission and Transfer Case

The transmission is rebuilt. It has larger main bearings installed as well as a higher 5th gear ratio installed for higher cruising speed on American highways. The flywheel is resurfaced and a new clutch friction disc and pressure plate are installed. The clutch hydraulics are also replaced, the clutch master cylinder, line, hose and slave cylinder are all new as well as the push rod, clutch fork and throwout bearing. The clutch fork has a steel reinforcement welded on over the pivot, a known weak point. the transfer case is rebuilt and features a one piece cross pin in the center differential for added strength. Rock sliders are bolted to the frame to protect the body from rocks and other obstacles off road. The rock sliders are boxed steel construction and have a tube protruding from the side to keep trees away from the body. The rock sliders are galvanized and powder coated for corrosion resistance.

Body

All damaged or corroded body panels are replaced with new genuine Land Rover parts. The body panels are stripped down to bare aluminum, urethane primed and then painted in a high quality enamel paint. The color of choice for our expedition Land Rovers is our own color called NAO Expedition Tan. The paint has a matte finish which resists scratches better than high gloss paint. The tan color also does not show mud and dirty as readily as other colors. This means that the land Rover will continue to look presentable on an extended expedition or off road setting. The body panels are assembled with new rivets, nuts, bolts and other fasteners after they are painted. All new genuine Land Rover weather stripping and seals are used throughout the body. An external roll cage is installed that is attached to the frame at six points. It is designed to protect the occupants and minimize damage to the the vehicle in a roll over.

Axles

The front and rear axles are rebuilt. The rear axle is a Salisbury which is a Land Rover’s version of the American Dana 60. The rear axle is converted to disc brakes and is rebuilt with all new bearings and seals. The front axle is the standard Land Rover axle it is also rebuilt with all new bearings and seals. The front swivel assemblies are rebuilt and set up with the correct amount of preload. The original 10 spline axles are replaced with 24 spline axles.

Suspension

All new genuine Land Rover rubber bushings are installed in the suspension. New heavy duty genuine Land Rover springs are installed to compensate for the added weight of the winch and brush guard up front. New genuine Land Rover shocks are installed.

Frame

The Land Rover’s frame is a strong fully boxed design but is prone to rust. Even a frame that looks good on the outside can be badly rusted inside which could cause it to fail with hard use. The replace the frame with a new galvanized frame made exactly like the original. The galvanized coating resists rust inside and out much better that the paint applied to the frame originally. We add frame mounted recovery points front and rear as well as rear bumperettes to protect the rear of the body and quarter panels. There are receptacles built into the front and rear of the frame specifically for accepting a high-lift jack for jacking off road.

Interior

The interior is restored with a new headliner, door panels and dash board components. Heavy rubber sound deadening floor mats are installed. New later model Defender seats are installed.

Steering

The Land Rover is converted from right hand drive to left hand drive. A rebuilt steering box is installed, a heavy duty high clearance tie rod is installed as well as all new tie rod ends and steering. The power steering pump and hoses are also replaced.

Brakes

The vehicle has four wheel power disc brakes with four piston calipers on the front and 2 piston calipers on the rear. The vacuum pump brake booster and master cylinder are all replaced. The brake hoses are DOT approved extended braided stainless steel units. The brake lines are Polyarmor which has a rust resistant coating.

Electrical

The wiring harness is replaced with a new unit, all electrical components are replaced, LED headlights are installed, the parking lights, turn signals and tail lights are replaced with waterproof LED lights as well.

Fuel System

The gas tank is replaced with a new unit and a heavy duty galvanized skid plate is installed to protect the tank from rock damage off road.

Outfitting

The Land Rover comes equipped with gear that will enhance its off road use. The rover has a heavy duty winch and bumper. The winch is rated at 10000 lbs this is roughly double the vehicles normal operating weight. The winch is a worm drive unit and is made in England. The bumper is more than twice the thickness of the original bumper and is reinforced to cope with the strain of the winch. The bumper has a pair of Dixon-Bates recovery points attached to the front. A brush guard is installed to protect the radiator from damage off road. A raised air intake is installed and is completely sealed all the way back to the turbo. The Land Rover is equipped with a complete recovery kit, a tool kit, a spare parts kit, a first aid kit and a fire extinguisher. A high lift jack is installed in the cargo bay for jacking up the vehicle off road. The Rover is equipped with high quality all-terrain or mud-terrain tires and heavy duty genuine Land Rover wheels.
